Hygge: how to bring it to your bathroom

Categories: Bathrooms

It's September already - where did the summer go? The kids are all back in school, the evenings are getting longer and soon the distinct nip of autumn will be in the air. The end of summer doesn't have to be all doom and gloom. It can be a great excuse to cosy up and snuggle in ahead of the colder winter months. It's the perfect time of year to introduce the concept of Hygge into your home. Hygge is the Scandinavian way of life that translates to cosiness. Hygge - pronounced hoo-ga -  has been taking the interiors industry by storm over the past year. It's still very much in vogue, so here, we share some tips on how to hygge up your bathroom.

Texture...

Hygge is about adding warmth and texture to your surroundings. The bathroom is a naturally 'cold' room in terms of how it looks, thanks to the porcelain and tiles, smooth surfaces and the amount of white. Warm things up by adding some texture to the space. Display your fluffy towels in a wicker basket or even on a small stool or table by your bath. A gorgeous traditional sheepskin may not be your idea of a typical bathroom mat, but there's no reason why you can't have one in your bathroom instead of your living room. You don't necessarily have to use it as a bath or shower mat. You could drape it over the back of a chair or place it under your chair or in a drier area of your bathroom if you prefer not to get it wet. bathroom rug

Warm it up...

Hygge is all about being cosy. And what's cosier than emerging from the shower or bath in the depths of winter and wrapping yourself in a fluffy warm towel? We have a great selection of heated towel rails that will not only heat up your bathroom, but it will warm your towels. Not only is this good for the environment - it dries your towels for you so that you can use them again the following day, saving on water - it's the epitome of luxurious cosiness. heated towel rail

The mother of all bubble baths...

To have hyyge means to relax. A stylish bath full to the brim with gorgeously warm water filled with essential oils and foamy bubbles is the height of relaxation. Sink in with a Scandi-style mulled wine or cider. Or if you prefer an Irish coffee have that instead. For an evening ritual though, a Baileys hot chocolate might be more relaxing. Add some vanilla or orange essence for a real treat. If your bath could do with an update, we've got a fabulous selection of whirlpool, freestanding and standard baths. Glam it up. Spoil yourself. You deserve it.

Lighten the mood...

Getting the lighting right is essential to hygge. Bathroom lighting doesn't have to be clinical. Think outside the box. You can get gorgeous chandeliers that are suitable for your bathroom to add warmth. You could even include a dimmer switch for atmosphere. Mirrors with lighting are also an option for you if you want to bathe in low light. And of course, don't forget the candles - hygge is about open fires, flickering lights and pure relaxation. Unless you have a fireplace in your bathroom, you can achieve the latter with the glow of candlelight. Make sure you always take safety into consideration with an open flame. bathroom mirror
